The Melbourne University Mathematics and Statistics Society, also known as MUMS, was formed to represent maths and stats students at Melbourne University. We organise a variety of activities, including seminars, trivia competitions, barbecues and pizza lunches and of course the annual Maths Olympics. We also put out our magazine Paradox at regular intervals

Real World Maths in Action

Every two years, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics holds a one-day maths fair for Year 11 and 12 students and their teachers.The program is designed to both engage as well as inform. The two key events are: Mathematicians Exposed! and the Mathematics in Industry and Technology (MIT) Challenge. The main objectives of the fair are:

  • To promote the importance and broad applications of mathematics and problem solving skills
  • To raise awareness of career opportunities for mathematics and statistics graduates.

Statistical Consulting Centre

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has a major commitment to providing a quality consulting service through the Statistical Consulting Centre. This Centre, which is largely self-supporting, has been running since 1984.

This competition has been running for over 30 years. It is organised by members of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at this University. The competition is open to students at all secondary schools in Victoria.
