Statistics for Research Workers, an intensive introductory statistics course, has been taught by the Statistical Consulting Centre in various guises for over 25 years (and, in other ways, for 30 years before that), with software packages including Minitab, SPSS and R. The challenge in this course, as in any applied statistics course, is to balance the cognitive load in learning core course content and a software package. Participants in the version of the course described here vary widely in their background in statistics and the use of software, and include some with minimal or no R experience. They are from business, government and the University. In this seminar, we discuss the challenges posed by different software packages and by R in particular, and describe a structured innovation designed to foster the right pedagogical goals, using R Markdown (including providing exercises and solutions). We present feedback from the course participants and outline what was successful, and some possible improvements.

Statistical Consulting Centre
I have worked in the Statistical Consulting Centre for over ten years. In this time I have consulted on over 600 different projects, and provided over 200 reports to clients. My background is in psychology and statistics, and I bring to consulting over thirty years of experience in working in the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Victorian government agencies, and academic institutions. I enjoy the challenge and stimulation of working with clients from many different fields. Providing plain language explanations and applied interpretations of statistical analysis, often using high quality statistical graphics, is an important part of my consulting practice.
