A relative algebraic torus theorem

In joint work with Vincent Guirardel and Gadde Swarup, we have proved a relative version of the algebraic torus theorem of Dunwoody and Swenson. I will explain what the Dunwoody-Swenson result is, after first discussing the necessary background. Only very basic topological knowledge will be needed. Then I will explain the idea of our relative result and why it is a natural extension. There will be essentially no proofs!
