Grid Diagrams

Grid diagrams are a classical approach to encoding links in the 3-sphere combinatorially, and the grid diagrams associated to topologically equivalent links are related by sequences of simple moves. Restricting the allowed moves captures stronger notions of equivalence appearing in braid theory and 3-dimensional contact geometry. I'll survey this beautiful theory, and if time permits, describe work that extends it to other 3-manifolds.
