Science graduates awarded for excellence in PhD thesis

Two students from the Faculty of Science have won a 2019 Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in PhD Thesis.

Dr Andrew Price from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and Dr Michela Mariani and the School of Geography were awarded the two Science and Engineering prizes, with six Chancellor’s Prizes awarded across the University.

Dr Price was awarded for his thesis: “Selected problems in enumerative combinatorics: permutation classes, random walks and planar maps."

Dr Mariani’s winning thesis is titled: "Palaeofire activity in western Tasmania: climate drivers and land‐cover changes."

This is the first time two students from the Faculty of Science have received this award in the same year. The Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in PhD Thesis is awarded each year to up to six nominees with students eligible for nomination if they completed their degree in the previous year.
