Mathematics and Statistics electives or breadth

Mathematics and statistics are a great complement to studies in other disciplines, and we have collected some suggested mathematics and statistics subjects which would be suitable as electives or breadth to complement studies in other disciplines.

Students wishing to do additional mathematics and statistics in their degree may also consider the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences.

Arts, Design, Music

Students from the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Design or Bachelor of Music can take mathematics and statistics subjects as breadth. The level 1 subject options depend on a student's school mathematics background.

VCE mathematics background Suitable subject(s)
Completed VCE Mathematical Methods 1/2 but not (or study score ≤25 in) VCE Mathematical Methods 3/4 MAST10012 Introduction to Mathematics  (semester 1)
Study score ≥25 in VCE Mathematical Methods 3/4 (or equivalent) Students can take some or all of the subjects from one of the standard first-year mathematics pathways.

Students with a qualification other than VCE should seek individual course advice about their options.

Note: Students intending to take the Diploma in Mathematical Sciences, or wishing to continue to second-year mathematics and statistics subjects, should complete one of the standard first-year mathematics pathways.

Biology, life sciences

Students intending to major in biosciences or health sciences are recommended to take a statistics subject:

Subject Offered in
MAST20031 Analysis of Biological Data Semester 1
Note: this is a level-2 subject and is usually taken in a student's second year.
MAST10010 Data Analysis 1 Semester 2

Students are also suggested to take a calculus subject (MAST10005 Calculus 1, MAST10006 Calculus 2, MAST10021 Calculus 2: Advanced or MAST10009 Accelerated Mathematics 2) from the standard first-year mathematics pathways.

Commerce

Bachelor of Commerce students may take mathematics and statistics as breadth, and may take mathematics and statistics subjects to satisfy the Bachelor of Commerce quantitative requirement.

To satisfy the quantitative requirement

Students should take one of the standard first-year mathematics pathways plus

Subject Offered in
MAST20004 Probability
or
MAST20006 Probability for Statistics
Semester 1 and 2*
MAST20005 Statistics Semester 2 or summer

* MAST20004 is offered in semester 1 and 2, MAST20006 is offered only in semester 1.

Other breadth subjects

The following subjects are suggested for students looking for other mathematics and statistics subjects to complement their Commerce studies:

Subject Offered in
MAST20026 Real Analysis Semester 1 and 2
MAST20018 Discrete Mathematics and Operations Research Semester 2
MAST30022 Decision Making
Note: This subject has additional level-2 mathematics and statistics prerequisites.
Semester 2

Computing

The following subjects are suitable as electives to complement a Computing and Software Systems major:

One of the standard first-year mathematics pathways plus any of the following:

Subject Offered in
MAST20026 Real Analysis Semester 1 and 2
MAST20018 Discrete Mathematics and Operations Research Semester 2
MAST20022 Group Theory and Linear Algebra
Note: This subject has MAST20026 Real Analysis or MAST10008 Accelerated Mathematics 1 as a prerequisite.
Semester 2
MAST30011 Graph Theory
Note: This is a level-3 subject and has level-2 mathematics and statistics prerequisites.
Semester 1
MAST30012 Discrete Mathematics
Note: This is a level-3 subject and has level-2 mathematics and statistics prerequisites.
Semester 2

Education

Students who plan to undertake the Master of Teaching (Secondary) may choose mathematics either as a major or a minor study.

Students wishing to complete mathematics as a major study are advised to follow one of the specialisations in the Mathematics and Statistics major.

Students wishing to complete mathematics as a minor study are suggested to take the following subjects:

One of the standard first-year mathematics pathways plus

Subject Offered in
MAST20026 Real Analysis Semester 1 and 2

Plus a selection of the following subjects (including at least one level-2 subject):

Subject Offered in
MAST10010 Data Analysis 1 Semester 2
MAST20018 Discrete Mathematics and Operations Research Semester 2
MAST20009 Vector Calculus Semester 1 and 2
MAST20004 Probability
or
MAST20006 Probability for Statistics
Semester 1 and 2*
MAST20005 Statistics
Note: This subject has MAST20004 Probability or MAST20006 Probability for Statistics as prerequisites.
Semester 2 and summer
