Three questions for Shintaro

What has your career looked like to date?

I studied statistics and mathematics at university and completed a Bachelor of Science in 2021. I worked as a research assistant at Defence Science and Technology Group in early 2022, where I contributed to the research of field estimation of chemical, biological, radioactive, and nuclear (CBRN) contaminated fields using autonomous searching robots. Since July 2022, I have been working at Ernst and Young as a Data Analyst specialising in consulting use and management of various data (e.g., financial, risk, sales) for clients.

What do you do in your current position?

Services that I have been part of delivering include setting up a data pipeline for better data management and developing dashboards to provide key insights.

How has your mathematics/statistics training been useful in your career?

My background in statistics has been assisting me technically and generally in my day-to-day work. There are many occasions where the tools that I am familiar with such as R and Python are used in my work. Further, attention to detail and logic has been an essential skillset for me.

Frequently, the work I do is new to me and having a background in mathematics allows me to learn the new skills and utilise them quickly. This is one of the reasons why professional service companies will hire people with background in mathematics. I found the skills and knowledge developed through the degree are highly transferable to any area.
