Micro Mathematicians

Micro Mathematicians is an enrichment program aimed at advanced Y5/6, Y7/8 and Y9/10 students who have an interest in maths beyond the classroom. The program offers a range of free virtual and in-person workshops throughout the year and new workshops are continually being added.

Melbourne Maths Workshops

We are delighted to offer Melbourne Maths Workshops again in Term 3 and Term 4, 2026. To request a visit to your school, teachers and staff can complete and submit the expression of interest.

If you are planning an excursion to the University of Melbourne's Parkville campus, or if you're interested in doing so, please email us at ms-outreach@unimelb.edu.au to discuss the possibility of including a Melbourne Maths Workshop for your students during your campus visit.

Who are workshops for?

Workshops are currently offered to student groups across Grades 5-12. Thanks to the support of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, these workshops are free for public schools in Victoria, with all costs covered.

If you have any questions or feedback, please also feel free to contact us at ms-outreach@unimelb.edu.au

What does a workshop include?

Students collaborate on a hands-on challenge which provides endless opportunities for extensions, questions, and discussions. Typically running for 90 minutes and led by members of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, workshops are designed to encourage communication and inspire curiosity. Each workshop introduces maths students to a current area of study or research.

Teachers will be provided with topic options ahead of time to discuss what will best suit their students. Options may include, for example, a key concept from number theory, new research from graph theory, an introduction to topology, or an example of modelling from mathematical physics.

We challenge students to communicate their ideas, collaborate with each other, and engage in mathematical communication practices such as defining terms, discussing perspectives, and posing questions. These skills are critical for everyone doing mathematics and statistics, including tertiary students, practicing professionals, and research academics.

We aim to give students a window into the wider world of mathematics and statistics study, research and possibilities. After school, mathematics is not one curriculum. It's a vast collection of studies and research areas, with many new topics to explore, including combinatorics and topology, optimisation and data science. It's also not finished - there are many problems yet to be solved and new questions to be asked.

The Micro Mathematicians program is part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, and is supported by the University of Melbourne School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Victorian Government.
