Mathematics and Statistics Research Challenge
Over 600 projects from primary and secondary students across Australia and New Zealand were submitted to the 2025 Mathematics and Statistics Research Challenge (MSRC). 25 finalists from six different states and territories were selected to present their work at the Parkville campus. All the finalists delivered impressive presentations and responded to questions from the panel of academics!
Micro Mathematicians
Hundreds of school students from Grades 5-12 were introduced to topics such as geometric tilings, graph theory and AI image recognition in the Micro Mathematicians workshops. The program focusses on extending high ability students by providing insights into mathematics and statistics topics usually reserved for university students, including current research. Simon Marais Mathematics Competition
In the 2025 Simon Marais Mathematics Competition, the University of Melbourne achieved 3rd place in its division and Best University in Australia. Three of our undergraduate students were prize winners: Christopher Tran and Zizhen Wu (best pairs entry in Australia) and William Cheah (best individual entry in Australia). The global competition remembers Dr Simon Marais (1964-2015) and his passion for mathematics, encouraging creative problem-solving and healthy competition.
