Dr. Alba Santin Garcia is a teaching specialist in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. She teaches students from different degrees the mathematics that they will need for their studies and their future jobs. She likes doing sport and learning languages.

What was your relationship with maths and stats like in school?

Maths was one of my favourite subjects. I didn’t really know what I wanted to be in the future, so I decided to continue studying maths at university because I enjoyed the subject.

Tell us about a role model you had throughout your journey to become a mathematician.

I had two amazing maths teachers in high school that I felt really inspired by. I think they really contributed to my decision of pursuing a career in maths.

What is the best thing about working in maths and stats?

Maths and stats is a universal language, so it allows you to work anywhere in the world and collaborate with people from all places around the globe.

What do you think is an important skill for a mathematician?

Resilience and perseverance.

If you were no longer allowed to be an academic, what would you do instead?

I would like to be a Park Ranger!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to hike, climb, scuba-dive, play board games and read.
